Study in China

With fast-developing universities, generous government scholarships and programmes in both English and Chinese, China has become one of the most interesting destinations in recent years.

Why China?

  • Full scholarships from the Chinese government (CSC)
  • Universities rising in world rankings (Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan, Zhejiang, etc.)
  • The chance to learn Chinese and build a career in Asia
  • Affordable living costs

Education system and levels

  • Bachelor’s: 4 years (medicine 5–6 years)
  • Master’s: 2–3 years
  • Doctorate: 3–4 years
  • Chinese-taught programmes require an HSK certificate; many master’s programmes are taught in English

Tuition and living costs

  • Tuition fees: approximately RMB 20,000–60,000 per year (higher for some programmes)
  • Living costs: RMB 3,000–6,000 per month depending on the city

Scholarships

  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — tuition, dormitory, monthly stipend and insurance. You apply through the embassy (Type A) or directly through a university (Type B); applications usually run from December to March.
  • International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (through Confucius Institutes)
  • Provincial and university scholarships

Admission requirements and documents

  • Diploma and transcript (notarised translation)
  • English (IELTS/TOEFL) or HSK
  • Study plan / motivation letter
  • 2 reference letters (from professors or associate professors)
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form
  • Police clearance certificate (for some universities)

Student visa: step by step

  1. Get your admission notice and the JW201/JW202 form from the university.
  2. Complete the Foreigner Physical Examination Form if required.
  3. Apply for an X1 student visa at the Chinese Embassy in Azerbaijan (or its visa service).
  4. Within 30 days of entering China, convert the X1 visa into a study residence permit.

Fees

  • Visa and residence permit fees: check with the embassy and the local immigration office

Can you work on a student visa?

Part-time work or off-campus internships are only possible with approval from the university and immigration authorities and an endorsement on your residence permit.
