The GRE General Test is run by ETS and is required mainly for master’s and doctoral admissions in the USA. Some European universities, especially in economics and engineering, also ask for or prefer a GRE score.
Exam structure
- Verbal Reasoning — 130–170 points
- Quantitative Reasoning — 130–170 points
- Analytical Writing — 1 essay, 0–6 points
- It can be taken at a test centre or at home
Where is it required?
- Some US master’s and PhD programmes
- Some European programmes (e.g. economics, data science)
- For some fields in Fulbright applications
Preparation tips
- Check whether your target programme requires the GRE — many no longer make it mandatory
- The Quantitative section is usually a strength for Azerbaijani students; set aside time for vocabulary for Verbal
- Practise under real conditions with ETS’s free POWERPREP tests
