TOEFL iBT is an academic English exam run by ETS and is widely accepted, especially by US universities. The exam was updated in January 2026: the Reading and Listening sections became adaptive, and score reports now show a new CEFR-aligned 1–6 scale alongside the 0–120 scale.
Exam structure
- Reading — adaptive, academic texts
- Listening — adaptive, lectures and conversations
- Writing — academic writing tasks
- Speaking — responses recorded on the computer
Where is it required?
- US and Canadian universities, Fulbright
- Most European universities accept it too
- During the transition, universities may state requirements on both the 0–120 and the 1–6 scale — check both
- The TOEFL iBT Home Edition taken from home is also available
Preparation tips
- Confirm your target university’s minimum score on the new scale as well
- Use the official ETS preparation materials
