Study in the United Kingdom

Thanks to some of the world’s oldest universities, short master’s programmes and the strong international reputation of its degrees, the United Kingdom is one of the most popular study-abroad destinations.

Education system and levels

• Bachelor’s: 3 years (4 in Scotland). Applications are made through UCAS.
• Master’s: 1 year (MA, MSc, LLM, MBA, etc.). You apply directly to the university.
• Doctorate (PhD): 3–4 years, research-based.

Some universities accept an Azerbaijani school certificate for direct bachelor’s entry, while others first require a Foundation year.

Tuition and living costs

• Tuition fees (international students): approximately £15,000–£38,000 per year; higher for medicine and MBA programmes.
• Living costs: differ inside and outside London; for the visa you must show in your bank account the monthly minimum set by UKVI (for up to 9 months).
• In addition to the visa fee, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Scholarships

• Chevening — the UK government’s full scholarship: tuition, monthly stipend, flights and visa costs. At least 2 years of work experience are required; applications usually run from August to November.
• GREAT Scholarships — partial scholarships at selected universities (the list of countries changes every year).
• Universities’ own scholarships and discounts (usually £2,000–£10,000).

Admission requirements and documents

• Diploma and transcript (with notarised translation)
• English: usually IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0 (in line with UKVI requirements)
• Motivation letter (Personal Statement)
• 1–2 reference letters
• CV (for master’s)
• Copy of passport

Student visa: step by step

1. Get an unconditional offer — the university issues your CAS number.
2. Take a tuberculosis (TB) test — required for applicants from Azerbaijan, only at a UKHSA-approved clinic.
3. Prepare proof of funds: the remaining tuition + up to 9 months of living costs (amounts on gov.uk). The money must be held for at least 28 days.
4. Apply online on gov.uk and pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
5. Book an appointment at the UK visa application centre in Baku and give your biometrics (fingerprints, photo).
6. A decision usually comes within 3 weeks. After arrival you prove your status with your eVisa.

Fees

• Visa fee: £558 (from 8 April 2026)
• Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year
• The TB test and optional visa-centre services are paid separately

Can you work on a student visa?

Bachelor’s and master’s students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during vacations.
