Master’s in Sweden 2027: applications are open, deadline 15 January

Sweden is known for high-quality education, a wide choice of English-taught master’s programmes and a safe student life. If you want to start a master’s in Sweden in autumn 2027, now is exactly the right time: the main application round is already open.

Most Swedish universities accept applications through a single national portal, University Admissions (universityadmissions.se). Below we have gathered the dates and requirements we checked on official university and government sources.

Key dates: first round for autumn 2027

  • 16 October 2026 — the application round opened;
  • 15 January 2027 — last day to apply (until midnight Central European Time);
  • 1 February 2027 — deadline for supporting documents and the application fee;
  • 1 April 2027 — admission results are published.

There is also a second round (15 March – 15 April 2027), but according to Stockholm University it is mainly intended for EU/EEA citizens, and many international master’s programmes are open only in the first round. So for applicants from Azerbaijan the real deadline is 15 January.

How many programmes can you apply to?

In one round you can choose up to four programmes and rank them in your order of priority. Build your ranking carefully: put the programme that is your first choice at the top.

Application fee and tuition fees

  • Application fee: SEK 900 for applicants who are not EU/EEA or Swiss citizens. It must be paid by 1 February; according to KTH, there are no fee waivers. Your application is not processed until the fee is paid.
  • Tuition fees: these depend on the programme and are listed on each programme page. As an example, at Uppsala University one semester of full-time study costs between SEK 50,000 and SEK 72,500, depending on the programme.

Language and academic requirements

The general requirements are a bachelor’s degree and proficiency in English (in the Swedish system this level is called “English 6”). The exact scores vary by university and programme. For example, Lund University School of Economics and Management requires at least IELTS 6.5 (no section below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 90 (at least 20 in writing). Always check the requirements of the specific programme you choose.

Document requirements can differ by country. Check the country-specific section of the University Admissions portal to see which documents (diploma, supplement, translations, etc.) are needed for an Azerbaijani degree.

About scholarships

Some universities offer their own scholarships to international fee-paying master’s students. For example, Uppsala University’s scholarships cover the full tuition fee but not living costs, and competition is high. Swedish Institute (SI) scholarships also exist; the dates and the list of eligible countries for the 2027 call are to be confirmed — follow the official si.se page. Since most scholarships require a timely university application, don’t miss the 15 January deadline.

After admission: the residence permit

Citizens of Azerbaijan need a residence permit to study in Sweden. The main conditions set by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) are:

  • being finally admitted to full-time studies;
  • paying the tuition fee before you apply;
  • a valid passport;
  • comprehensive health insurance, where required;
  • proof of funds: for applications made in 2026, at least SEK 10,656 per month (the 2027 amount is to be confirmed).

The residence permit application fee is SEK 1,500 for adults. According to the agency, 75% of recent decisions were made within 3 months, and applications are processed in the order they are received. So act without delay once you receive your admission result.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving it to the last day. Completing the application on the portal, scanning and uploading documents and making the payment all take time. Keep at least a few days in reserve.
  • Forgetting to pay the fee. If the application fee is not paid by 1 February, your application will not be processed.
  • Missing a programme’s extra requirements. Some programmes ask for a motivation letter, a portfolio or credits in specific subjects. These are listed separately on the programme page.
  • Overlooking separate rules for joint programmes. KTH notes that some joint programmes have their own application process and deadlines.
  • Planning finances too late. The tuition fee must be paid before you apply for a residence permit, so work out your budget in advance.

Step-by-step plan

  1. November: choose your programmes and check each one’s requirements and tuition fee.
  2. November–December: if you don’t have an IELTS/TOEFL result yet, book your test date now.
  3. December: prepare your motivation letter, CV and recommendation letters (if the programme requires them).
  4. By 15 January: complete your application on universityadmissions.se and rank your programmes.
  5. By 1 February: upload your documents and pay the SEK 900 application fee.
  6. 1 April: check your results, then move on to the tuition fee and residence permit stage.
